Iowa Online Poker Bill Unlikely to Pass

Bill that would legalize Internet poker Iowa state seems to have little or no chance of passing in its current form, making Iowa the last to reject state laws regulating gambling line.

However, calculations can be definitively dead. Instead of calculating Likely to edit the report calls rather than gambling on the Internet from Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, which could give tips on how to improve the bill, and how it might affect the current state of the gaming industry gambling.

According to supporters of the bill, somewhere around 150,000 Iowans currently play online poker for real money. If the state were able to regulate online poker and keep that play on an in-state network, it is estimated that such a site could generate as much as $30 million in new tax revenue for Iowa each year.

The Iowa bill was less expensive and more focused than bills in other states, such as the one that was eventually vetoed by Governor Chris Christie in New Jersey. The bill would only have regulated online poker, without legalizing other Internet casino games. As with most bills proposed at the state-level, the legislation would only have legalized intrastate poker, meaning Iowans would only be able to play against each other.

However, opposition to the bill was strong from the moment it was proposed. Some Iowa legislators opposed the further expansion of gambling in the state on moral grounds, either opposing to gambling in general, or fearing those minors and those with gambling addictions would be able to gamble more easily if it were available online. Others were more concerned with how the proposed online poker room would affect Iowa’s existing casinos, especially if the legislation were later expanded to include other casino games.

Iowa is just one of many states considering online gambling as a means of increasing tax revenue. Other states are considering legislation such as Florida, New Jersey, Nevada, Hawaii and California.

As for the Rumors of Rio in Las Vegas Generate Sales

With World Series of Poker (WSOP), just over three months ago, rumors began to swirl again on the sale of Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

According to Las Vegas noted journalist and gossip monger Robin Leach on the website Law Vegas Weekly, Caesars Entertainment is “about to” announce the sale of off-Strip casino that hosted the WSOP since 2005. Leach reports that sales are a major player in the development of Las Vegas and hospitality management worldwide, the Light group. A look at the Light Group’s portfolio shows that it plays an important role in Las Vegas “nightlife” scene, but lacking in one key area.

The Light Group, which was founded by Andrew Sassoon and Andy Masi, operates many of the high profile nightspots in Las Vegas, including the Bank at the Bellagio, Jet at the Mirage, and Haze at the brand new Aria Resort and Casino. Through the development of these venues, The Light Group has been expanding its notoriety throughout Las Vegas. What was lacking, according to Leach, is the ownership of a hotel property.

Leach states that he first heard about the possibility of The Light Group getting into the casino ownership business around Thanksgiving and that they picked up steam through Christmas and New Year’s. “The buzz began when TLG owner Andrew Sassoon reportedly looked with serious interest at buying the troubled Hard Rock Hotel,” Leach wrote in his article, but he also stated that this rumor was quickly denied. He believed, however, that there was something to the rumors: “I had a hunch that I’d gotten the right information, but the wrong hotel.”

Several rumors about the sale of the Rio have been floating around since last year. In an August article on Poker News Daily, Seth Palansky, the Communications Director of Caesars Entertainment and the WSOP, denied rumors of the sale at the time: “We’ve already been meeting about the 2011 WSOP and are planning on having it at the Rio with the Main Event final table in November at the Penn and Teller Theater.”

In the same article, Caesars Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Gary Loveman also dispelled the rumors about a sale, focusing instead on how the company had been in acquisition mode rather than selling.

In a Business Week article from April 2010, rumors named two groups that were looking into purchasing the Rio. Starwood Capital Group LLC and Colony Capital LLC were among those groups mentioned, with a reported price of $500 million for the Rio. In his article, Leach reports that The Light Group has never been mentioned in any of the discussion regarding the sale of the Rio.

Opened in 1990, the Rio has been the host of the WSOP since 2005 after Harrah’s purchased the rights to the tournament and moved it from its historical base at Binion’s in Downtown Las Vegas. It features over 2,500 suites, 120,000 square feet of gaming space, and is home to top shows such as Penn and Teller.

Leach reported in his article that neither The Light Group nor Caesars Entertainment has responded to requests for confirmation of the deal. Even if the two companies deny the reported sale, Leach stands pat behind what he calls “solid rumors” that the sale is soon to occur.

Poker Daily News spoke with Vice President WSOP Ty Stewart on rumors of sale of Rio. “The company (Caesars Entertainment) decided to listen to any interested buyer,” Stewart said, without confirming the action of society. As regards the status of the WSOP, “said Stewart,” We really believe that WSOP improving every year, with more space and more amenities. We recognize the advantages and disadvantages of Rio. If we were to pass, we move to better housing. “

2011 PCA Ladies Event Pits Satellite Winners Against Pros

Ninety-six women began today in the Poker Stars $1K Ladies Event, satellite and 28 players who qualified for some tough competition. There are three Team Poker Stars Pros in the field also, and Vicky Coren Maridu Mayrinck as well as Team Poker Stars Sport Star Fatima Moreira de Melo. Other good ones are Kathy Liebert, money winner of all time high in women, Veronica Dabul and Lauren Kling, who cashed in several major tournaments in recent times between the fourteenth places in a WPT tournament.

In addition, Ana Marquez, who just missed the final table of the main event of the PCA, yesterday, when she finished tenth today so good, feel confident and relaxed after his recent success of other famous actors, including Beth Gains, Megan Milburn, runner-up in the EPT London Ladies and He Soljan, winner of the EPT Prague ladies.

Then to add more star power to the event, we have Ricki Lake playing at a table that includes several of the tough players mentioned above, and one satellite player who has never played a live event. The line up at the table includes Fatima Moreira De Melo; Beth Gains; Lauren Kling; Cathy Hong, serious player and girlfriend of Team Poker Stars Pro, Elky Grospellier; and finally Teija Halkosaari; a freeroll satellite winner who is playing her first live event. Teija traveled for over 30 hours to get here from Finland, and she is very excited about her first trip to the Bahamas. Although she has never played live, Teija has played thousands of hours online on Poker Stars before coming here, and is currently holding her own.

Like Teija, this is the first big buy-in tournament for many of the players, but for one player, the Atlantis is starting to seem like her poker home away from home. Elizabeth Bennett-Martin has played the Main Event as a satellite player for the last three years, and she has played the ladies event each year as well. She was last seen with a good sized stack and holding a stuffed animal given to her by one of her sons. Her son and the rest of the family are here for the third year enjoying the Atlantis, while she plays poker.

An early hand ended the tournament for satellite player Rose Genest when her full house (tens over jacks) was beaten by a bigger full house. Another satellite player from Finland, Veronica Engberg, pushed in with jacks over tens and Rose called with what is normally a lock hand. Rose, who has recently made poker a major focus in her life by logging several hours a day playing satellites and playing in the Poker Stars Women’s League, took the bad beat in stride, but the early end to her tournament was obviously a devastating loss. When she realized however, that she had the rest of the afternoon to relax and get ready for the party tonight, she seemed to brighten visibly.

For all players, today’s event will provide poker and exciting opportunity to learn some of the best in the world of poker. After all, getting beaten by people like Vicky Coren or Kathy Liebert is a story that, after a short time there will be a little bitter to say.

She Plays Her Cards Correct

If you’ve always dreamed of living a moment that changes your life, try this. Mother of Amanda De Cesare, 35, won the reality show Star Poker in 2009 and pocketed $ 100,000.

Show, hosted by the poker champion Joe Hachem a Channel Ten HD channel, it was a game version of The Apprentice, Donald Trump, a Talent contest, which allows a novice to hit the big time.

After beating 18,000 applicants and 11 finalists, the red carpet was rolled out for De Cesare. She spent a year travelling the world with Hachem as her mentor, competing in tournaments in Monte Carlo and Las Vegas.

The victory was one of those pinch-yourself moments. ”The show sounded like a bit of fun and I thought I’d give it a go,” De Cesare says. But never in her wildest dreams had she expected to win.

At the time, the chips were down in her personal life but soon her fortune was on the way up. De Cesare poured the winnings into the mortgage she took out on her house after buying out her ex-husband, Frank, when their marriage ended in 2008. The two remain friends and share custody of their daughters Sarah, 14, and Chloe, 9.

De Cesare, a speech pathologist, learned to play poker because of her ex-husband. Six years ago, while still married, he was short of a player for his weekly game with friends so she took a seat. She’s been showing her poker face ever since. And it was because of the separation that she had more time to play and hone her skills.

The first big tournament De Cesare won was the Joe Hachem Deep Stack Series at Crown in 2009, pocketing $72,304 – a week after winning the $100,000 on TV. Excluding the reality program, she has banked $190,716 from her tournaments.

The Aussie Millions poker championship, the largest in the southern hemisphere and the fifth-largest in the world, is under way at Crown and although De Cesare is not competing in the main event, which requires a $10,600 ”buy-in” – the entry fee – she’ll try her luck at smaller games.

During the 18-day event, which ends on Sunday, there are 20 tournaments with a prize pool of $20 million and from that; $2 million goes to the winner of the ”no limit holdem” main event. More than 3000 entrants are vying to be the last man or woman at the poker table, and players have jetted in from the US, Canada, Britain, South Africa, Israel, Estonia, Portugal, Russia and other countries.

De Cesare is a female player in an overwhelmingly male world where blokes sit transfixed, wearing caps and sunglasses, often listening to iPods.

She has noticed a cultural difference in the way she is treated overseas. While male players in Melbourne treat her same, she is the subject of more aggressive tactics from men in the US. ”They try and bully you out of the hand. They bet big and think you’ll get scared and fold.”

Although she previously didn’t consider herself competitive, De Cesare soon discovered when she started playing that she wanted to win, regardless of the prize money. ”Being a female, the boys tend to get a bit macho. I love to beat the boys at their game.”

But she says poker’s main appeal is the opportunity to broaden her social circle. ”Generally with the activity you choose, you find people very similar to yourself. Poker draws people from all over the place. You could be sitting next to students or doctors.”

After her whirlwind year playing poker with Hachem, De Cesare returned to work as a speech pathologist and now divides her time between the two pursuits. Working with children with special needs, she focuses on non-verbal communication, such as expressions, and found her expertise came in handy at the poker table.

”My biggest skill is reading body language,” she says, divulging some handy inside information for her competitors. ”I look at things like breathing rates; people will hold their breath if they are bluffing. If I touch my chips, what reaction do they have?”

Once the cards are dealt, players look down at their cards but De Cesare doesn’t. ”I don’t look at my cards until it’s time to act. I can tell which people have a big hand. People do things instinctively and they don’t know they’re doing it.”

Poker has been her financial saviour and a window into another world, but rubbing shoulders with celebrities still gives her a thrill.

Corona De Cesare was a day when the avid poker by the way Shane Warne, said:”Hey, Amanda”Aveva heard of him through his friendship with Hashem… De Cesare was blown away, thinking of the time: ‘Shane Warne has just said my name! Amanda is just the outskirts.”

Lady Gaga, Charlie Sheen and Moses: Celebrities and Heroes in American Life

lady-gaga

For most of the last century, Americans — and especially religious Americans — have been expressing concern about who is a hero in America. Religious Americans today are particularly distressed about celebrity culture and the inclination of their children to find something heroic in the antics of Lady Gaga or whoever else may be the latest focus of celebrity gossip. A number of weighty theories have developed about the meaning of America’s celebrity obsession; some claim that celebrities have been deified by young people who lack a moral center and that celebrity worship has become a substitute for traditional religion. I offer three thoughts on the subject of American heroes.

First, young Americans do not worship celebrities. They do not see Lady Gaga, Lindsey Lohan and Charlie Sheen as worthy of emulation or sources of inspiration. They love celebrities and the gossip surrounding them but mostly as a source of entertainment and distraction. Of course, celebrity status is inflated today because of our media-saturated culture; we can learn more details, engage in more gossip, and be endlessly titillated by inside stories and frank language. Nonetheless, young people are fully aware that most celebrity lives are devoid of real purpose or value. And even for the young, their interest has a strong element of schadenfreude: They watch the rise of celebrities, knowing that in most cases the rise will be followed quickly by a fall. Indeed, if young people have a problem, it is not that celebrities are their heroes; it is that they have no heroes at all.

Second, when it comes to heroes, parents have hardly set a good example. Even when they recognize authentic heroes, they seem unable to remember them and honor them in an appropriate way. The 9/11 First Responders are the most recent example. At a defining moment in our country’s history, these Americans responded with great devotion, love of country, and physical courage to guarantee the safety and security of their fellow citizens. And yet, a decade later, with many suffering and dying of disease, they were brushed aside by a political establishment that had acclaimed their actions and sang their praises. If it had not been for the intervention of John Stewart — a comedian — it is likely that these heroes would have been ignored and forgotten. I am not certain that this is a matter of American self-absorption, but it is certainly indicative of fleeting attention spans and an absence of moral seriousness.

Third, in a world devoid of heroes, religious Americans have a special responsibility to offer the young examples of heroes with whom they can identify and who inspire personal transformation. We have a ready source of such heroes in our religious texts, and especially the Bible. There we find accounts of spiritual heroes, moral heroes and military heroes, who can serve as an example to the young and who offer practical values that enrich their lives. In my own classes, I often focus on lesser known Biblical characters, because the young like to find their inspiration in unconventional places. As one example, I ask them to consider the case of Pharoah’s daughter. This young woman is given no name in the Biblical account and appears in only a few verses in the early sections of the Exodus story (Exodus 2:5-10). Why is she a hero? There are multiple reasons, as young people quickly point out. Because in a heartless society she demonstrated compassion toward an abandoned child. Because she defied the cruel edicts of an absolute ruler who had called for the murder of innocent children. Because she was courageous — adopting a child, after all, was a demonstrative public act, certain to infuriate Egyptian rulers. Because in saving the child she was defying not only the authorities but her own father — a sensitive and difficult point, but an important one. Because in rebelling against the apparatus of the Egyptian state, she was rejecting the privileges of her own class and siding with an oppressed minority. Did this nameless heroine make a difference? Well, yes. She changed the course of history.

Lady Gaga is bizarre and interesting, and celebrity figures are a wonderful diversion. Nonetheless, true heroes, such as this brave daughter of an ancient ruler, are in a different moral category. A society without heroes is a society in moral peril, and our children are hungry for role models who can give their life purpose. Turning to our ancient texts and traditions, religious Americans need to fill the vacuum.

5 Major Poker Mistake

poker mistakeBecoming a good poker betting player is a drive that includes picking up tips and recommendation along the way. unluckily, it’s easy to forget (or ignore) what we’ve already learned on this journey. That being said, here are 5 common poker mistakes you should never forget.

1. Not looking for Easy Games

Either out of laziness or ignorance, some players just don’t take the time to look for easy poker games. However, making money in poker is just as much about finding opponents you can beat as it is about being a good player. This being the case, you should always look at the flop-viewed percentage (the higher the better) and the average pot size (the lower the better) for each table.

2. Playing Losing Sessions Too Long

One of the biggest problems with gambling occurs when you start losing; at this point, you want to play until you win the money back. Unfortunately, what usually ends up happening is that you play too long and lose even more money in the process. Even though it’s tough, you need to quit losing sessions when you’re making mental errors.

3. Quitting while you’re Ahead

As silly as it is, many of us quit winning poker sessions early just so we can feel like a winner. The obvious problem with this is that A) you don’t capitalize on winning sessions, and B) you won’t improve by quitting just to log wins. Case in point, don’t quit while you’re ahead for fear that it could turn into a losing session.

4. Calling to see if someone is bluffing

Bluffing is one of the most overrated aspects of poker. Even still, many players are constantly worried about being bluffed, and so they call everything. Sure players bluff sometimes, but the large majority of the time, players actually have a decent hand when they’re making big raises or re-raises. If you’re constantly in fear of being bluffed, you need to work on putting opponents on a range of hands.

5. Not studying your Results

No matter whether you’re a beginner or professional poker player, you need to be studying your results after sessions. This means looking at hand histories to see when you are making plays with negative expected value, and reading/watching strategy advice to fix leaks. The more work you put into studying your results, the better player you’ll be in the long run.

Poker Legend Allen ‘Clever Piggy’ Cunningham

Take a quick look at poker’s “List of all time money” and you’ll see that Allen Cunningham is currently in ninth place with earnings of $10,945,147 in live tournament.

Rated 33 years is cashing in tournaments since 1996 and is 5 times winner of the WSOP bracelet in Seven Card Stud, No Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Hold’em. He also voted by his peers as ‘Best all around player fewer than 35 and in 2006 it was upgraded to Pro, sponsored by a full member of Team Full Tilt.

However, unlike many other highly successful poker pros Allen Cunningham is a polite and softly-spoken player who has managed to avoid much of the media limelight reserved for more flamboyant celebrities. So just who is Allen Cunningham and how did he get started in his prospective poker career?

For a start the Californian said he was fascinated with poker from a very young age after countless games playing with his family at the kitchen table, but only decided to give the game his best shot after turning 18. He then goes on to explain that it was a slow progression and only after playing for a year did he begin seeing some solid wins.

“At that time, I was in my first year of college and also had a part time job delivering pizzas which I used to fund my poker. Eventually I won two tournaments in a row, which paid $500 each, then I stayed and played cash games and won another $1k. It wasn’t exactly quick but I never looked back from there.”

Allen Cunningham said he first cut his teeth playing limit poker, which was the game of choice in California at the time but played many of the other poker variants in order to sharpen his all round poker understanding.

Cunningham further developed his skills by studying poker literature and developing an overall strategy for different situations, although he said he started out by playing tightly and only added more looseness and aggression as he evolved as a player.

Evolve as a player Cunningham soon did as all the elements of his game came together and as he explains:

“When you’re at the table you’re using intuition. You’re not figuring out any sort of math or strategy; you have to think about that ahead of time…When you add some more sophisticated plays, you’ve probably thought about the maths behind a lot of situations and now you’re thinking about how some of the players are playing and incorporating a few tells and whether people are playing looser or tighter than normal.”

As mentioned, the list of Allen ‘Clever Piggy’ Cunningham’s poker achievements include almost $11 million in tournament winnings, and 5 WSOP bracelets, with his biggest score to date coming at the 2006 WSOP Main Event, where he finished 4th for $3,628,513.

However well justified, Cunningham said he does not really suffer from large amounts of invoice, or interfere with your bets and make enough money to stay away from ultra-high stakes cash games. He also said that he does not rely on the limelight, and added:

Phil Hellmuth Prepares for Dancing with the Stars

Phil Hellmuth

If Hellmuth Twitter feed is to be believed, the Poker Brat is set to join the cast of Dancing with the Stars – the U.S. version of Strictly Come Dancing – when it is sent to next March.

Writing in his Twitter last weekend (Dec. 18), Hellmuth said, “OMG! Phil Hellmuth (me!) on “Dancing with the! Stars” Outrageous! May make a fool out of myself Worldwide Television, once again …”

If the rumors are true, Hellmuth could make a monumental fool of himself, as for those unfamiliar with the show, it features celebrities prancing around on screen in skimpy sequined outfits. Contestants are paired with professional ballroom dancers as they shimmy across the floor performing a host of dance routines, including the foxtrot and the rumba, in a bid for the Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) crown.

And if Phil’s Jitterbug is as good as his gambling he may just find himself rubbing shoulders with past DWTS champions Donny Osmond and Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey. 6ft6 portly Phil should be warned, though, the public doesn’t take kindly to contestants carrying a couple extra pounds.

In the last series, which finished in November, Sarah Palin’s recently-pregnant daughter Bristol graced the dance floor, only to receive a barrage of criticism from the media. One comedian branded her “the white Precious” and said she was “the only contestant to gain weight”.

In response to the comments Bristol said winning SWTS “would be like a big middle finger to all the people out there that hate my mom and hate me.” Sadly she finished third so she never got to swear. But let’s hope Hellmuth – who seems equally inept at handling criticism – fares better if he does take part in 12th series. Perhaps the thought of all the sequins and lycra will motivate him to shed the pounds and have the last word on Huck Seed’s $100k weight loss bet.

Only time will tell whether these promises are good, but one thing is for sure though, if the Poker Brat is not getting his jive on national television, the poker player will surely be in some respects …

Useful Tips for Casino Visitors

The in-built house benefit that casinos wield over all the games they offer is persistent, a virtual assurance to wear down every gambler’s bankroll over the extended haul.

But did you know the velocity at which people play the games has a direct force on how hard the house perimeter will hit them?

Because you can play a slot machine more rapidly than any table game, it is significant to play at a slower pace. Spinning the reels every few seconds during any given playing session translates into a major asset, every dollar of which gets hammered by the house edge.

By slowing down the speed at which you play slots you give yourself a fighting chance of staying in the game longer.

Video poker has a legion of fans who are attracted to the game because every hand you are dealt and every card you draw is as random as a computer program will allow.

This makes the game as close as humanly possible to playing with your own 52-card deck at the kitchen table. A virtual deck of cards is constantly being shuffled between plays in the game’s computer program.

When you make a bet and hit the deal button, the shuffling stops and five cards are dealt off the top popping up left to right on the screen. The shuffling of the remaining virtual cards continues until you make a decision on what to hold.

When you hit draw, the number of cards you need to fill your hand pop up in the vacated spaces.

Of all the wagers you can make in a casino there is one in which the odds aren’t stacked against you. That wager is called “free odds” and it’s found at the craps tables. The odds are free because the house takes no edge on them.

Payoffs are made at true mathematical odds. Here’s what you should know. Once you make a line bet and a point is established, you have the option of making an additional bet that the point will be made.

Playing free odds is essential to taking advantage of the opportunities at the dice table and in doing so you’re also trimming even further the low house edge that the casino takes on line bets. It’s really the best bet you can make on any casino game and makes learning how to play craps well worth the effort.

Building up playing credits on slot and video poker machines carries seeds of destruction for recreational gaming enthusiasts. When you are playing with electronically metered credits instead of cold, hard cash, it is easy for your money to lose its value.

Always be aware accurately how much money you have on the machine in credits no matter what number you are playing. With the increase in the number of low-denomination slot games, it’s easy to forget that pennies add up to dollars. Don’t make the mistake of extravagant away any good luck by neglecting
